Today, I learned something disgusting in the news.
Today, Donald Trump has fired FBI Director James Comey. Part of the reason why this is disgusting is because Comey was leading an investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia during the 2016 election. However, the official account is that Trump fired Comey at the behest of the Justice Department on the grounds that he (Comey) had treated Hillary Clinton unfairly during the 2016 election and tarnished the image of the department. Here is the termination notice that Trump sent Comey:
Dear Director Comey:
I have received the attached letters from the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General of the United States recommending your dismissal as the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I have accepted their recommendation and you are hereby terminated and removed from office, effective immediately.
While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau.
It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission.
I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.
Donald J. Trump.
Personally, I do not believe the official account for a single second. Let us remember that Trump, during the 2016 election, promised that he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton. In addition, Trump frequently used the phrase “Crooked Hillary” during the 2016 election. Why would Trump feel compassion for a woman that he had defamed and defeated during the election?
I think there is something going on with the Trump campaign and administration. Is it possible that Trump’s campaign officials convoluted with the Russian government? Did Trump fire Comey as a cover-up? I think that’s possible, since no one in the government was notified of Comey’s termination of employment. These are dark day for America. We have a President who considers himself above the rule of law, and makes executive actions on a whim. That is not the hallmark of a liberal democracy, but rather an illiberal dictatorship.
